Can I borrow your wetsuit, please?

By Venus Goes Gidget · On June 28, 2011

Really? You would not want to borrow used underwear, would you?

Twice I’ve been asked that question and was not quite sure what to say. Nice person I’m, I found it hard to outright decline.

One chick who is not even my friend (other than facebook but who’s not friends on facebook) asked if I could lend her a wetsuit for a weekend away. I thought it was a strange request. I ended up not giving it to her with the excuse of needing it myself – ‘forgetting’ to mention the fact that I have two wetsuits.

Just recently, this time a workmate and real friend had a similar request. She was going away for the long weekend with a girlfriend and needed a wetsuit. First, she asked another workmate who is a super easy going chick. I could tell by the silence that the easy going chick was not entirely comfortable either. I jumped in and saved an awkward situation by offering a wetsuit. Only because in the meantime I’m the proud owner of three wetsuits and I’m not using the one I gave away.

Either way, don’t people know what you do with wetsuits? You put them on every day. They are like a second skin and who wants to give away a second skin. Besides, I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t oppose wettie warmers (heating by peeing) which is – yes, I admit super gross, but effective nevertheless.

Only a newby would ask for a wetsuit. One piece of advice: Maybe put it out there that you need one for a weekend away and ask your mates where you can borrow one. If they are not precious, they’ll lend you one of their own anyway. If you are half serious about surfing though, invest in your own wetsuit.
