No wave wrap from last weekend as I swapped the board for skis for a couple of days. I went to Perisher for a bit of fun in the snow. The initial outlook was not that great. It was quite warm in the last couple of weeks which did not do the base (which was quite good before) any favors. The weather forecast was cloudy and potential (rain)showers. Bohoooo. No good. We went anyway. It was a good excuse to get away from the City to Surf madness on Sunday.
We drove down late Friday, hired our Ski gear from Sammy (best beanies in town if you are in for a unicorn hat – check out the pics) and settled into our house in Jindabyne for a well-deserved glass of wine after 6 hours of drive. (Maybe 7 hours – considering the first 20km took 3 hours. It ain’t fun trying to get out of Sydney on a Friday avo).
After a freezing night, we got all geared up in 20 layers to brave the cold of the ‘mountains’. Before we even did our first couple of runs we were sweating our bums off and shed the layers again. Both days were sunny, warm and just gorgeous.
The snow conditions were not exactly perfect. Some runs too soft and slushy, others a bit icy. We were lucky though, we tried quite a few runs and found great conditions on Mount P. Yes, a little bit icy but it still had a decent cover of powdry snow which I prefer over slushy soft slopes anyway. And the best of all, it was not busy at all. No queuing at the lifts. We got heaps of runs in, especially on the second day. Whoop whoop.
All skied out, it was super quiet in our mini bus on the way home. We all (other than our organising mastermind and driver Mike) had a good nap on the 5 hour drive home.
Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock to the system sitting in the office not even 24 hours after racing down snowy Aussie hills. Oh well…lucky me I might hit the slopes in Austria soon again and in the meantime, I’ll get my kick in the waves in front of my house.
