…get a movie about a shark attack story.
In the search for alternative entertainment in the absence of swell, I’ve decided to rent a movie and happened to stumble across the movie Soul Surfer. I’ve hired it against the advice of a (male) friend: I’ve watched half of it on the plane. It’s cheesy – forget it”. Perfect. Sounds like a chick flick then.
I got it anyway and yes, whilst it is a bit cheesy, in general I really liked it. It’s based on a real story about Bethany Hamiliton, the Hawaiian surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack and against all the odds not just survived it but also returned to the pro-surfing scene surfing with only one arm.
The shark attack scene was freaking me out completely. It looked pretty real and the frantic race to the hospital certainly picked up the pace of the movie too after a bit of slow happy-Hawaiian-surfie-family-and-we-all-love-each-other-and-god-kind-of start.
I love, love the surf footage throughout. The real Bethany Hamilton was doing most surf scenes herself and she’s just amazing to watch. Her first attempts back on the board with only one arm were heart breaking though. She keeps on falling off and has to pretty much re-learn surfing. Even more heart-breaking (and I have to admit I shed maybe a little tear) was when she is in her first comp and she gets caught on the inside in a massive set not being able to duck dive. So sad.
If you get the DVD (yes, old fashioned I know) check out all the bonus material too. Some more surfing in there and the making of the movie is quite interesting too, showing how everyone had to learn how to surf, how they’ve filmed the shark attack, and managed to get all the one arm scenes.
Admittedly, not the best movie of all times, but a very inspiring story nevertheless. Definitely highly watchable if you’ve got nothing better to do.
