It’s that time of the year again. Only 3 days to go to Christmas. I trust most of you are more organized than I am and have bought and wrapped all your Chrissie presents. If you have not here are some gift ideas every gidget loves or at least needs…some ideas might be applicable for the common surfer dude too. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can make a surfer happy with as little as $5 bucks. Here are my top 10 tips for smaller and bigger budgets alike.
1. Wax: Yes, sounds lame but it’s the little things…a bar of wax or 3 makes for the perfect Kriskringle. You can never have enough wax…starts from $5
2. Wavefinder: the wavefinder is that little book that tells who where to find the best waves in certain conditions and how to get there. I love that book and it should in every surfer’s glove box. I think it’s around $20 bucks and you can get it in every surfshop. You can get it for overseas spots too in case you mate has the Aus one already >>
3. Surf DVDs: the no-brainer present. Head to your local surfshop and buy a DVD. If you are really strapped for money, you can re-gift that bonus DVD that came with your latest surfmag…
4. After sun care stuffs: Every gidget loves frothing in the surf but every gidget hates what the sun does to skin and hair. So why not put a little mini gift box with after sun care stuff together. Just head to your local chemist and surely you’ll find something that says after sun care or the likes or your hair salon surely flogs some sort of after sun care hair product. Starting from $20 +
5. Framed surfpic: Which surfer does not love a nice surf pic? Frothers and Aquabumps are your best bet in the Eastern suburbs to get a nice water related pic. Probably a bit tight turn-around at this stage but even better get a surf shot of the to be gifted person and get that one framed or blown up onto a canvas. Every surfer loves a good surf pic but every surf loves a framed surf pic of him/herself even more. You’ll need to fork out at least $40 bucks for one of those…
6. Boardies: Only suitable for present-buyers with taste. Guys need boardies, girls need boardies, everyone needs boardies and just like wax, no surfer can have enough boardies (just make sure you keep the receipt in case you only think you have taste…and check old boardies for size before you go on your gift buying mission). Starting from $50 if you are lucky.
7. Surf mag or Tracks subscription: depending on your budget, wrap up a couple of surfmags or go subscription all the way. Starting from $99 >>
8. Coastalwatch Plus subscription: Coastalwatch has launched Coastalwatch Plus which is the pimped up version of Coastalwatch. You get access to all the latest and greatest surf-news and surf-forecasts and cams, member discounts and what not. Every surf (geek) gidget, would love it but probably not buy for him/herself, so THE ideal present. I think it’s around $70 or so (and it comes with a surfmag subscription so technically free – or that’s what I told myself when I subscribed to it). Check it out >>
9. Surfboard: Too much cash? You really fucked up with that particular friend? Or you really only want the best of the best for your beloved friend? There is only one way to go for Christmas: Buy a surfboard BUT careful…you can NOT just go and buy ANY surfboard. A surfboard must be carefully tuned to ones preferences, ability and body. So best thing is you find a local shaper and get them to make a board and the actual present is a “voucher” to get a board shaped and it will be the best board ever your friend gets. If you need a shaper in the area. AH is brilliant. His boards start from $620 and he’s just around the corner. Check out his site >>
10. Roadie: That’s the priceless one. Give your friend a “roadie”. Works especially well for your friends who are grateful about a surf-lesson. I just made up a ‘voucher’ for a roadie including transport, surf lesson, after surf brekkie (i.e. I drive, I stay with you in the line up and give you a few tips and pay for the brekkie after). It was a bday present in my case but my friend was super happy about that one, so I’m sure it would make for a great Chrissi present too.
By the way, it looks like Santa is bringing a cool present this year. There are going to be 4ft waves on Christmas Day… whoop whoop…
PS to my lovely friends: no excuses for crappy xmas presents this year …
