Surf movie review: Fighting Fear

By Venus Goes Gidget · On February 23, 2012

‘Fighting Fear’ – a kind of surf documentary – was on at Bondi Open Air the other day – courtesy of Tracks. Fighting Fear is made by the same dude like the ‘Bra Boys’ Movie. It’s about two guys who grew up surfing in the Bra and made it one way or another.

Mark Matthews is a pretty well known big wave surfer, so there’s quite a bit of nice surf footage to be seen. It amazes me every time how these guys have the balls to drop in on monsters like Shipstern. How could you possibly? I always catch more waves after I’ve watched a big wave movie. If those dudes manage to survive wipe outs in 15 ft waves, I should be able to handle a wipe out in 2 ft Bondi. Actually, Mark Matthews, had one pretty bad accident at Shipstern’s. He almost broke his neck. He still had the guts to get back into it and surf that thing again. Respect.

The other dude in the movie is a guy called Richie (never heard of him before the movie I have to admit). He is Mark Matthews’ child hood mate and tow in partner who found another career in Mixed Martial Arts. So apart from surfing, you’ll see quite a few fights.

My favourite scenes are the pie contest (you watch how hard it is to eat a hot pie really fast – never thought of this before) and the tribute to Steve Irwin is just gold. They took a crocodile surfing with them in MASSIVE waves as a tribute to Steve. Not a real crocodile of course a blow up one.  See for yourself:

All in all, it is a nice story about the ups and downs in the lives of two bogans (cute bogans) who turned out to be quite successful. Yay. Some nice surf footage and quite enjoyable to watch but I was glad that I scored free tix and did not have to fork out $20 bucks for it.

Our Rating – 3 out of 5 barrels:
