Weekend Wave Wrap: A tally…

By Venus Goes Gidget · On April 9, 2012

… of a great surf weekend away:

10 surf peeps – 3 Aussies, 4 Pomies, 1 Irish, 1 Swede, 1 Austrian

3 hours South of Sydney

1 amazing house including a jacuzzi. We were not 100% sure if we were meant to use the Jacuzzi. We tried to get it going but had to abort the mission when we short-circuited the house.

100 hours of surf. Amazing surf. Good size swell. Barrels. Righthanders. Lefthanders. Hardly any wind. Awesome.

8 surf sessions. We surfed lots every day only Saturday was not so exciting because Southerly was in early. Happily surfed out now.

1 epic fail. The only really shit surf we had. We paddled out for 20 min to Green Island. When we finally made it to the line up, a strong Southerly hit and turned the surf into an absolute mess.

1 fin chop. Luckily, the fin only managed to slice my wetsuit and not my skin (only a little bit anyway). It would have meant stitches for sure if it was not for the wetsuit which now has a hole in it.

1 pair of sliced feet. Well, well that happens if you try to shortcut it over the rocks. You may slip on the reef. I know why I rather paddle…

1 lost fin (and almost lost arm). The only casualty was the fin. The arm was relatively unharmed from the encounter with the fin. The fin was gonskies.

100 hours of naps. Our favorite past time other than surfing. Even though there were 10 of us in the house, it was mostly quiet because chances that we were either in the surf or had a nap (or trying to solve Sudoko – emphasis on trying).

1 fish. I did not quite feed all of us but that’s all our very talented fishermen could present.

20 schnitzels with the help of two talented schnitzel making apprentices. By day 3 we were over BBQ so I decided that it’s about time for my mates here to find out what a real Schnitzel is supposed to taste like. A lot of tenderising (with a spoon in the absence of a tenderiser), battering and frying going on to produce so many schnitzels.

A lot of chocolate eggs. Needless to say when it’s Easter.

2 dolphins.

3 manta rays.

1 snorer.

1 sleepness night due to the above.

1 boobie show. Not quite a voluntary one.

1 fire by the beach. Thanks to Bill’s wood. “Is that you Bill, that’s not you Bill, that’s not your wood” – that’s how the conversation went or similar when the guys were collecting firewood whose ownership was unclear…who’s Bill anyway?

1 very special sunset. This was the most magic moment of the whole trip. We were out surfing in perfect conditions on Sunday night. The water was  glassy and crystal clear. 3-4 foot perfect waves were rolling through. The sun set and lit up the sky in orange. No wind at all. It made the water resemble a turquoise mirror. It was just so beautiful. One of those moments when you are just happy… happy and grateful for being a surfer. Just when we thought it could not get any better 2 dolphins swam by. Magic. I’m not making this up. It was really like that.

Total: 1 amazing Easter weekend.
