Wow what a weekend in the wave department. I did not get out of the hood for a surf trip as there was lots of stuff going on this Saturday – Garage Sale Trail, Hen’s Night, Surprise Engagement Party… I knew if I wanted to get any chance at surfing at all, it needed to be super early. So I dragged myself out of bed at 630 on a Saturday morning…and it was worth it. Surf was about 3ft, sun was out and there was no wind. Lucky, because a couple of hours later, it was a completely different picture…The sky clouded over, it became superwindy and waves did not look like fun at all anymore. In Bondi that is. Manly was perfect all day. That’s where I had to go to for the Hen’s night (day). I have to admit it was quite hard to sit in front of perfect waves and not being able to surf them. Oh well, for once I figured I would survive swapping my board for a glass (or two) of bubbly to celebrate my friend’s Hen’s . The ferry ride back to the city turned out to be interesting too. There was quite some big swell coming in which made for a shaky ferry ride – maybe a bit more shaky for me than for other people due to high bubbly intake…
After my excursion to Manly, I went to my friend’s surprise engagement party. She said yes. We all celebrated with the gorgeous couple. So far so good. Until the morning. I woke up early as I do by default. Checked the surf cam on my phone and what did I see? Perfect lines of swell coming in. How exciting. Well the excitement only lasted until I tried to get up and realised that I did not feel that great standing upright. The 16 hour party marathon had taken its toll. There was no way in hell I would be able to surf. So I did what I have not done in years. I slept in. As in I slept in until 3 pm.
I still felt a bit shaky in the afternoon. But the surf looked just too good. So I tried to ignore my headache and any other hangover related pain and went for a surf. And it was great. 3-4ft waves. Hardly any wind. Warm water. I stayed in the water until the sun set and the moon came up which was very impressive. In case you have not seen the moon or the news. The moon is a ‘supermoon’ today, the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It looked very special from the water and almost made me forget my pain.
The week ahead is looking good too. Lots of swell and the summer is making a small comeback. 25 degrees are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday I’m flying to the Gold Coast on the hunt for waves there. Yay for me.
