Jeez it was not the nicest of weekends, was it? Grey was the dominating color outside and it was raining for most of the time. I guess it could be worse. At least it was not windy and the rain keeps the good-weather-surfers away making for less crowds. So for the real surfers amongst us it was not too bad after all.
Saturday, we drove to the Northern Beaches – mostly to score some waves but also to score some nice glasses of wine at the Manly food and wine festival. Unlike most times, we drive up there, we surfed the first beach we’ve checked. We thought Curly might work and it did! It was almost glassy, about 3ft and peaky. We had such a ball. All of us were starved for waves after an average week. We ended up surfing for almost 3 hours. By the time we got out of the water though, it was pissing down. Not so much fun for the wine festival, so we gave that one a miss.
On Sunday, conditions were similar. The only problem: Bondi was still almost unsurfable. East swell is not the best direction for Bondi anyway, so it was tiny and then the banks have been just shocking lately. Ok, we are used to close-outs in Bondi for anything that’s over 3 foot but it could not even handle the small stuff all week. Just really bad. So I headed to Maroubra Sunday morning. Since it was still shit weather and I was there early, Bra was pleasantly uncrowded in the North corner and highly surfable. Fun.
All in all, despite the grey back backdrop, it was a great weekend when it came to surfing. And there is some hope for Bondi’s banks too. Massive swell is forecast for Tuesday. It will move some sand around and hopefully form some perfect banks.
