Tin Tin and I arrived in G-land on Monday morning after a bumpy 2-hour ride on the speedboat. For those of you who don’t know G-land; it is a surf spot in East Java. It’s quite a famous one for it’s insane long left hand barrels. If you’ve ever read surf magazines or watched surf movies you would have seen the break for sure. It’s quite full on as you stay in the middle of the jungle in a surf camp and you don’t necessarily have the luxuries you might be used to i.e. no shopping, no roads, no real cars (only trucks operated by lawn mower motors), not hot showers. So I guess it’s not for everyone. I absolutely love it though.
The surf is just amazing. I’ve been surfing every day for 4-5 hours or more. You get all sorts of waves. Today for example, the surf picked up again. I thought about going to the smaller breaks but I still wanted to challenge myself a bit and jumped out in G-Land. There were some big magazine freight train like waves coming through. My heart dropped a beat a few times when I tried to paddle into some of the big waves. I made a few and oh my god, it’s the best feeling ever. Some people still think it’s fairly small. Double overhead faces on the sets are big enough. That session definitely did put me back in my box. Used to catching heaps of waves, I was more than proud to catch 7 waves in 2 hours (yes I did count that was part of my psychological trick to make myself drop down the face – I had to catch at least 5 before I was allowed to get out to get lunch…and it worked ☺). In the evening I went to one of the smaller breaks. A right further down the beach. It was still head high on the sets but so easy compared to the earlier session in G-land.
I can tell you it’s just the best spot in the world ever. Apart from the waves it’s great for a number of other reasons. In no particular order…
No people other than the peeps in the camp
You don’t have to wear shoes other than reef-booties
All you do is surf eat sleep surf eat sleep ok sometimes you might get a massage too.
You don’t have a worry in the world. The only decision you have to make is which break you’ll be surfing in the morning.
You see lots of awesome animals – monkeys, a mouse, peacock, wild pigs, shark (again), sea urchins (lots), sea stars you name it…it’s just so beautiful.
A beer will never taste as good as that first sip of your cold Bintang after 3 amazing surf sessions.
Ha and the best thing, even though it’s allegedly ‘flat’ you still score 3ft perfect waves. I wonder what it’s going to look like when it’s 7ft as predicted tomorrow…sounds like it’s barrel time soon…Better not have too many Bintangs at the full moon party tonight. Yes, I even find a party in the jungle. I think it’s going to be a pretty tame one. Looking around at dinner everyone’s looking like they are about to fall asleep. Everyone’s surfed out and happy after a great day of surfing. Good stuff.
