What a beautiful weekend. Spring is definitely in the air. If you can’t tell by the sunshine, surely by the flatness that has overtaken Bondi for the weekend. Bondi was a lake on Saturday. I think you would have struggled to catch a wave on the mal.
I had high hopes for Sunday. A 3 foot swell was forecast. The disappointment was great when I saw only a few week 2 footers rolling through. Surfable but very inconsistent. The long board comp was on in the middle bank but South looked better anyway. I took the fish out. I’ve surfed for half an hour until I saw the boardriders club setting up for the short board comp. Great. 10 minutes later a dude from the club paddling out kindly asking us to make way for the boardriders club. He did really ask in a nice way. So I thought oh well I had few fun waves even though they were rather fat and weak – I may as well get out. I was just waiting for my last wave. The first 4 competitors paddled out and one of the dudes in the comp shirt (yes, you know who you are, always very friendly when you see me checking the surf, not so friendly when in a comp), he told everyone pretty much to piss off and surf at the other bank. So he was sending everyone to the bank where the long board comp was on. Seriously, what a joke. I get it that the clubs have their comps and of course you would make way. Especially, if they are asking nicely fair enough but paddling out like Kelly and claiming the whole break …not so great.
Oh well, I guess if you can’t beat them just join them. Maybe next season…I should practice anyway, now that I’m shortlisted for the Austrian surfing team. No joke. I figured out that Austria has a Surfing Association and as such an Austrian surfing team. After fulfilling ‘tough’ entry criteria (As you can imagine Austria as a landlocked country does not have too many people nor the funding to be a surfing super power), I’m on the list of competitors. They’ll let me know next time I can represent my home country in surfing. You can only hope surfing will make it into the Olympics in Rio 2016 ;-) It would be almost as good as the story of the Jamaican bobsled team in the Winter Olympics.
In the short-time, I’ll do my best to get over my post Indo depression. It’s not easy… I thought I was over it but the underwhelming weekend wave wise and crazy work week did not really help. So I’ve booked flights to the Gold Coast in 3 weeks. That will ease the pain hopefully.
Talking about competitions, Billabong Pro in Teahupoo is on at the moment. You might need to watch it to get your wave fix this week. The surf forecast does not look too exciting for the Eastern suburbs this week. Maybe towards the end of the week.
Have a good one
