About you and how got to surfing: I’m Bavarian (it’s near GermanyJ), I’ve lived in Australia for 7 years and spent most of my time studying and generally not working too hard. Because I have always been doing sports all my life (Biathlon, snowboarding, cross-country skiing), I needed a new one to obsess about in Australia and I had always been fascinated by surfing. So I found an old surfboard in the trash, moved to Bondi and spent the first year surfing every single day (mostly twice) not worrying about how good or bad the conditions were (not like I knew what was good or bad back then anyway). Then I met some lovely boys who kept taking me surfing pushing me to learn really fast and I did! Then joined the Bondi Girls Surf Riders where I met lots of friends inclusive most of my besties.
Local break: Bondi.
What I love about surfing: I love being in the Ocean; the feeling of freedom and complete detachment from everything that is ‘on land’; I love the sea life; the fact that I feel so so happy after a session even if I didn’t get good waves; the way people react when you tell them you’re a surfer girl (makes me feel special somehow…); I love having a excellent reason for buying tons of swimsuits and bikinis; love being part of the surfing community – meeting new people, hang out by the beach and just share the passion; I love the physical and mental challenge that comes with it. If mermaids would exist, I’d be one for sure!!!
What I hate about surfing: Agro surfers – just chill!!, crowds, fin cuts, dings, that as soon as you tell a non-surfer you’re a surfer they ask if you can teach them how to surf – so annoying.
Favourite surfspot in Oz: So many – Crescent Head is definitely a favorite
Favourite surfspot overseas: Yet to be determined.
Favourite surfboard: 6.1 Dhd, Mick Fanning edn
Favourite surfer: Alana Blanchard
Favourite surf movie: Blue Crush – yes I know it’s super cheesy
What I do in real life: Writing a PhD about women’s surfing!!! And some teaching at Southern Cross University.
