Weekend Wave Wrap: WAAAAAAAAAVES!

By Venus Goes Gidget · On September 9, 2012

Yes there were waves. Real waves. How exciting. After a little bump last weekend there was not much on offer in the wave department throughout the week again. I did get so desperate to get into the water that I went for my first swim of the season. Without a wetsuit mind you. In order to survive the freezing cold water without rubber I ran…I ran one lap in the soft sand which only shows how desperate for water-time I was considering I can’t stand running.

Saturday morning was still tiny. It was a beautiful day and I could not wait to get into the water. Patiently, I was waiting for the swell to arrive and the tide to drop. At around 2 pm I was done with the patient thing and hopped in despite the still fullish waves but was kind of hoping that they would get better as the tide drops further. It did. It got a little bit bigger. I was glad I waited. The only problem, every surfer in Bondi seemed to have the same idea. At one point I think there were about 30 people in South Bondi gunning for the same left. It was only lining up every 5 minutes or so. So go figure what the chances were of a) catching a wave and b) catching a wave by yourself. Quite a few peeps were very disappointed as the swell that was forecast for Saturday initially just did not eventuate. Oh well, still a beautiful day and still well worthwhile to get in the water anyway.

Surely, the swell would arrive by Sunday….Bravely, I ignored any calls for Saturday night entertainment, determined to be out by sunrise Sunday morning. I rolled out of bed at 5.30 to check the surf. And there it was…the highly anticipated South swell had finally arrived.  I was hoping we would be the first people in the water to have that amazing left to ourselves for a little bit at least but there were already 5 people on it. So we opted for the middle bank instead which served up a nice 3ft right. We had such a great time. I had the best waves I’ve had in a looooong time in Bondi. I could not believe though how packed it was by 7.00 am on a Sunday morning. I should know better after all these years surfing Bondi but it never ceases to amaze me. Anyway by 7.00 am I was happily outsurfed anyway. I went for a second session around lunchtime. This time I tried the left and yes, it’s an amazing left but it was rippy as hell and hard to stay in the right spot so I drifted back to the middle bank which was not as good as it was in the morning but fun nevertheless. I was just so happy to have waves again.

Aaaaaand guess what….forecast says 3ft from South and light winds early for this week. And sunshine too.  Yay.

Have a great week
