I had a busy week and was still recovering a bit from the “Venus Goes Gidget Surf away”. There was none of the usual chit chat on Friday in the surf about amazing surf coming up on the weekend so I assumed it would be pretty average. I did not even check the surf report nor did I plan any roadies for the weekend. In short, I was in for a lazy weekend. I even had my phone turned off so I did not get tempted to have a cheeky look at the surf report when I woke up for the first time at earlyish hours. I forced myself to sleep in. At 8.30 I could not bear it any longer, I needed to see what the surf was like…phone on…check Coastalwatch and …unbelievable…of course the one day I’m not getting up at sparrow’s fart, the surf in Bondi is pretty much perfect. Well, it was not big – only about 2 ft but the occasional bigger one came through and the left on the middle bank lined up beautifully. The sun was out and almost no wind. What more can you wish for. Needless to say I was out of bed and in my wettie in no time and got amongst the crowd. And hell yes there was a crowd. I did think that the Stand up paddle board craze kind of went past Bondi or did never really catch on. I was wrong. There were about 5 paddle boards out there. Lucky most of them seemed to be more or less in control of the massive boards. You would not want any of those on your head…Despite every man and his dog being out there, I managed to get in a few fun sneaky lefts but was over it fairly quickly. Just too much for my lazy weekend. Not much later the wind was in and whilst surfable not very inviting.
Sunday, I could not help myself but get up early. Again, I went to check the surf with no expectations and they were exceeded again. It was about 2-3ft, even with the odd bigger set, offshore or light winds for most of the day. I’ve surfed the early morning shift when the tide was still a bit low. Maybe a tad too low. Oh well I had some fun waves nevertheless. In the South, the Bondi Board riders were on. They were in good form with music cranking out of their speakers at 7.00 am. Luckily, there were waves across the whole beach so the Board riders could play in the South Corner amongst themselves. I went for another surf in the afternoon and had some fat but fun waves again. Good times. So much for my lazy weekend…
Looks like we are in for some surf all week again. Tomorrow could be a bit of a no-go for Bondi though with strong Southerly winds and 5 ft waves during the afternoon. Oh well, we shall see. I’ll keep you posted via Instagram and Facebook page update. (hint hint…follow Venus Goes Gidget on FB or Instagram for early morning surf reports as well if you don’t already…)
Have a great week
x Clauds
