Weekend Wave Wrap: Alternatives

By Venus Goes Gidget · On November 25, 2012

I should start calling these posts Weekend Flat Wraps. I don’t want to complain because it was a beautiful summer weekend. However, we’ve had a pretty bad run on the wave front again. In fact, it was so small all weekend, I could not even get myself to drag my 9ft board down to the beach. I’ve checked a few times hoping for a small pulse or a little wave on either side of the high tide but it was super tiny.  Even the guys out on mals were struggling to catch a wave so I figured it’s not worth the effort.

Now what to do… a hot weekend without waves…it’s like a schnitzel without crumbs…it’s not as great but you can still dig it. It’s what you make of it. Ok that’s a rather lame analogy but anyway, here are some ideas for you next wave less weekend (and I’m afraid there will be a few this summer) to get your water fix and a bit of exercise that does not require a board.

Bay swim: Have you ever tried to swim the bay in Bondi? Well, most of you probably have. I have not. I’ve always found it rather intimidating to cross the bay without a board. In preparation for my Ocean Rescue Award I’ve sucked it up and did. And … surprise, surprise, I did not drown and I’ve actually quite enjoyed it. Once you get into the rhythm of it, it’s not that hard – especially on a flat day like yesterday.

Pool swim:  Again in the name of Surf Life Saving, I now also need to train in a pool. So I’ve been doing some laps at Icebergs lately. Initially, a pain in the butt, I’ve even started enjoying that…ok kind of. At least it’s a saltwater pool and outdoors and the Icebergs is really a nice spot to hang out. The only bit I was not so happy about was that someone stole my goggles while I was in the sauna… outrageous … who steals goggles?? Oh well….

Teaching surfing: If you surf, it might a bit boring to catch half-foot waves. However, boring for you might be fun for your mates who have been nagging you forever to teach them how to surf. There is no better time than a day where you can’t be bothered surfing anyway. You still get some water and exercise time (yes, pushing people onto waves can be exercise too) and on top of it some happy mates.

It looks like I’ll be swimming a lot the next few days…looking at the surf forecast, the outlook for waves is rather dire. Oh well, at least I’ll be super fit for my impending surf trip. I’m sure I’ll have some wave stories then…

Have a great week

x Clauds
