What a stunner of a day Sunday was. Blue skies, light winds and plenty of sunshine and waves! Saturday was not so great on the weather front. It was a bit gloomy but also plenty of waves on offer.
I’ve surfed Bondi both days. Saturday morning was actually the worst surf I’ve had in a long time. Bondi has had a good run in terms of banks over the last few months and we got quite spoilt. Saturday morning there was really nothing to write home about. It was about 3ft but the banks were not working at all on the low tide and it was just generally pretty sh. I’m sure it would have been firing somewhere else. That’ll teach me for being a lazy bum and not organizing a trip anywhere. I could not get myself to go for another surf all day. Apparently, there was a window around lunchtime when it was quite good.
Sunday morning it was more of the same to start with. The only difference was that it was actually sunny. Banks not great. I think there were even more close-outs than on Saturday. None of my friends out there were very inspired either. At least I knew it was the waves and not me. Worst wave count yet again. And the waves I caught were either closing out straight away or fizzling out after one turn.
When I’ve checked lunchtime again, it was looking good. Wind has stayed light all morning and the incoming tide kept the waves from shutting down. There was a really fun, fat left in front of the skate park and a fat right in the South corner. Oh and the sun was out and it just felt like summer. So I got overexcited and instead of squeezing myself into the wet steamer from the morning, I’ve brought out my 2 mil rashie and shorts for the first time this summer. And it was not even too cold to start with. Managed two hours out there before I got really freezing cold in urgent need for a hot shower. It was much more fun than in the morning. Having said that, the left was so crowded, I gave up after 20 minutes and headed South where it was slightly less busy. You really needed to be in a hassling mood today if you wanted to catch a lot of waves. A lot of guys just heading straight back to the inside once they caught a wave. Oh well, I was far too chilled out to put up a stink about it and had a few fun ones nevertheless.
It was too much of a beautiful day. Only slight annoyance as per usual at the start of summer, I got a reminder from mother nature to put on plenty of sunscreen again. Me and sun over lunchtime are just not made for each other. Not only do I sport a pink face now but I have an imprint of a white bum on red legs. Ouchies…Wettie for me again tomorrow.
Bondi looks fun on paper tomorrow… Forecast is 3ft swell from the South and light North winds. I think the swell will drop faster than that and I don’t have much hope that the banks will all of a sudden work at the morning low tide. I shall check either way and will update you via Facebook.
Have a good week,
