Every time I go to Indo, it’s good to see how many girls are surfing. If you live in Bondi, you might think there are only a few, especially if you compare the numbers to the hordes of male surfers. In Sumbawa, I remember one day even, when gidgets outnumbered the boys and the girls were all ripping too. One Aussie girl was a top surfer. Rumour had it she even surfs Supersucks which is a pretty nasty wave and I would not even dream of even trying to surf.
Funny enough there were lots of girls though who didn’t even come from typical surfing nations. For example lots of Canadian girl surfers. Canadians? Really? I did not even know they knew what surfing was. But then I guess I can’t comment too much on that one considering I’m not exactly from a surfing nation…In my surfing daze I forgot to interview the Canadian ladies for the gidget profile but I managed to pin the two Dutchies down who were ripping in Sumbawa. Lucky girls, they’ve been travelling for months (and still are) surfing through Indo.
Even though by far not as many girls in the water in Bondi as overseas, especially now that the water has gotten warmer, you see many more girls out there and there are fantastic initiatives out there to get the chicas into the water.
Locally, the Bondi Girls Surf Riders for example have been doing a fantastic job for years bringing the girls together for comps and trips, etc. have a look at their website and find out how you can become a member here >>
Surfing NSW is organising a massive ‘Girls go surfing day’ at the moment. This year, it’s on the 9th and 10th of Feb run by local surf schools. Have a look: www.girlsgosurfingday.com >>
