Don’t we love nice weekends? Unlike the last few weekends we had not one but two picture perfect days in a row. The early mornings had that bit of an autumn chill to them already but not really cold yet…just refreshing… helping you shake of that morning sleepiness quite quickly.
Saturday, was one of my favourite fellow gidget friends birthday. So we all got up bright and early for an early morning surf in Maroubra. It was not the most inspiring of all mornings on the surfing front I have to admit. Maroubra was not really working at the early morning high tide. The surface was ruffled by an early breeze and you had to fight your way through a whole seaweed forest to get paddling. I still enjoyed the surf very much surrounded by friends and it was also good to bump into familiar faces in the line up I have not seen in a while. My favourite part of the birthday surf gathering was the breakfast part at the Bellagio afterwards. Have you been there? They have mean brekkie there.
No more surf for me in the afternoon. I thought about it but the bank that looked most appealing to me was the one between the flags…so I gave it a miss.
Sunday, was surf lesson time. We went up to Palm Beach to get away from the crowds. And oh how beautiful is Palmie? I just love it up there. A couple of foot out the back made for a fun lesson. Actually, it was a surf lesson I won’t forget for a while…it was my first surf lesson where I managed to stack it worse than my student. I’ve got yet another lovely bruise on my thigh as a sweet memory for at least another week.
It was also my first surf lesson that had to be abandoned due to a shark alarm. It went something like that…‘you are not scared of sharks, are you?’ ‘na not really, you?’ ‘no, not on the surfboard’…helicopter flying over our heads…helicopter coming back…’hmm they would tell us if there was a shark right?’ ‘ye probably’…helicopter circling above our heads…forgot about sharks as conversation got sidetracked to talk about flying helicopters…caught waves…wanted to paddle back out…shark alarm goes off…agreed that it’s time for lunch.
Back in Bondi surf looked like fun but I was a bit unfaithful to my home turf the ocean as I had a skateboard testing session scheduled. I want to get a skateboard. I figured it a) will help me with surfing… and b) it will even get me faster to do my surf checks and c) it’s fun. One of my friends has heaps of them. I tried them all. A bit hesitant at first, I quickly got the hang of it again (lil sis you would be proud of me…all those training sessions in our DIY skate park paid off after all). Ok, still a bit wonky when going downhillish. I have not even tried a proper hill yet and ok the beer might not have helped…I can see myself having a ball on that thing. Watch out…literally, as I don’t know how to turn yet.
Oh my god, I just realised I did not surf Bondi once this weekend…not quite sure how that makes me feel. And it’s not looking like Bondi will be the go in the next few days either. According to the latest forecast it’s 2ft from the ENE, Bondi will be the smallest out of the Eastern suburbs. But guess what, supposedly it’s going to be sunny and hot all week. You gotta love autumn, right?
Have a good week

:) Was at Nth Palm yesterday also, the Alarm and the Westpac chopper were for 2 extremely large hammerhead sharks that were checking out the beachs as they swum south. We waited until the chopper was well and truely around the sth headland before we let the kids back into the water.
oh I was wondering what type of shark it was. Did not get to chat to the lifeguards…How do you define ‘extremely large’? Good on your kids for heading back into the water. We chickened out ….
