Surf was fun this morning but how cold was it? As surfers we are particularly susceptible to weather and have something like an in-built weather radar… I don’t get deceived by the shiny yellow ball anymore… even though the sun was out, you could tell we are closer to winter than to summer.
As a surfer you know winter is on our doorsteps when…
…you need to put on long pants and hoodie for your morning surf check.
…the usual casual walk to the beach with your board under your arm turns into a run to the water to avoid cold feet and get a bit of a warm up in at the same time.
…the sun’s out, the water is warm but the breeze makes you shiver.
…your springy is just not cutting it anymore. You get away with it for about half an hour but then it’s goose bump central on your thighs and arms.
…black is back…no more unrestricted views to sixpacks and big guns. More and more features are covered up again by neoprene.
…it’s painful to walk on concrete (especially the pebbly one) with wet feet on your way back from the surf.
…you start running out of hot water in the shower before you’ve warmed up again.
Having said that, this is the best time of the year. The water is still warm and the first proper swells are on their way. If you are cold now, wait until the water is cold too which makes you feel like an icy-pole when you come out of the water at best of times.
So enjoy the glorious autumn days as long as they last.
