Bondi has been good. Really good. Not only did we have this amazing right in front of the lifeguard tower (some smart cookie came up with the creative name lifeguard rights) that was firing at the beginning of last week… After a few rainy days, a fun left emerged in front of the skate park right in time for the weekend. And so did the sun again.
When I checked the surf first thing Saturday, it was still chilly at first and the surf still looked a bit worked up from the stormy days. In fact, I almost ditched my surf session in favor of a yoga class in a cosy yoga studio. My froth got the better of me and off I went. And I was glad I did. While I was out there, the sun came out, it cleaned up and the tide dropped. I had the left in front of the lifeguard tower almost to myself with only a few other people. Heaps of fun. We were actually wondering where everyone was. When I got out of the water, I saw why. It simply looked shit from outside. It was one of those days where it was far better than it looked.
Sunday it looked heaps better too. It was about 4ft and the skatepark left was still fun. Unfortunately, I had a garage sale on with friends so I only went for a super quick surf earlyish. I almost got barreled on my last wave and it took all my gidget strength to resist the temptation to paddle back out and got out of the water. It took even more gidget strength to not abandon the garage sale when I checked the surf throughout the day. It looked pretty good all day to me.
On a side note, the water is still pretty warm too. It did not look it though when I first checked Saturday morning. There was also quite a bit of wind chill. So I decided to give my new 4’3’ a test run. Oh dear. That was not one of my smartest moments. I did not realise how warm the water still was and I was boiling hot. What was I thinking? Trying a 4’3’ in 21 degree water… I felt like in a sauna or like in 28 degree Indo water. My mates were still in spring suits having a good laugh about my 4’3’ trial…Flushing the wetsuit only gave relief for about one second because I’ve got one of those furry Ripcurl e-bombs which heated up the water straight away. Unbelievable that thing (nope I don’t get paid to say that – I wish), when I got out of the water and let some water out, I swear it was bath tube warm water and by the time I got home it was dry. Crazy. Definitely too hot at the moment but happy to know that I won’t be cold in winter. You know, those days when the water is going to cool down to 16 and the air is only 7 or so. Yes, that’s when I’ll be laughing…
Today the surf is not so great, it’s about 3-4ft in Bondi but messy. Surfable I guess if you really wanted to and were really desperate but no need to be desperate. We should have swell all week again and the wind should get lighter and turn offshore. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are my pick this week.
Have a great week everyone.
