I’m not just talking about any mojo but the surf mojo. I spent more time looking for my surf mojo rather than actually surfing. Where is the surf mojo that makes me get up at crack of dawn to play in the surf? I guess it’s fighting a losing battle with my snuggly self who prefers to stay under the warm doona. The snuggly self seems to feed on rain, wind and cold…
Even though there were waves on the weekend in the 3 -4 ft range (the whole week in fact), it was a bit miserable out there and not easy to peel yourself out of bed into the surf. So I’ve developed a few strategies – some of them tried and tested last week:
- Find a friend whose surf mojo needs a boost as well. If you team up for a ride, you are more likely to actually follow through on your intention to go for a wave in the morning.
- Play a mental trick on snuggly self by focusing on the feeling of catching a wave and how good it feels being in the water. Under no circumstances, think about getting into your cold, damp wetsuit. And be aware, that you don’t fall back asleep whilst dreaming up the best waves you could catch.
- Works well with the first one…go for a drive you never know…you might even be rewarded with sunshine. Saturday morning for example was miserable. It was pissing down. Nevertheless, I picked up my surf students as I was due to give a lesson and we drove to Palm beach. Once we were up there, the blanket of clouds lifted and it we had a good time in the sun. We thought it would have cleared a bit everywhere but when we got back to Bondi, it turned out, it was pissing down all day. Lucky, we did not bail in the morning…so we got to see that elusive, round warm, yellow ball they call sun at least for a bit.
Or just f… it and book a holiday to Bali… I have not don’t done that this year if I see another FB photo of the perfect line up in the sunshine I may accidently hit the ‘book now’ instead of the ‘like’ button.
It looks like I’m not the only one who finds it hard to awaken the inner surf mojo on grey days like today…have you seen Aquabumps today? Even Bondi was deserted this morning despite decent surf. Oh well, it’s not all that bad, with the shortest day over we’ve made the corner and are now on a straight line to summer with the days getting longer. So don’t be too hard on yourself if the snuggly self takes over the surf mojo. The surf mojo will take over again eventually.
We are meant to have another week of swell (and rain). I’m not sure if it’s true but some surf forecast sites indicate a massive spike in swell…like a 16ft one…due to hit tonight and easing off to normal size waves throughout the week. So Bondi and the likes are probably too big but novelty spots like the harbor might be working.
Hope you have a great week gidgets and friends of gidgets. The sun will come back eventually….
