Admittedly, today was a bit grey and the weekend may seem like a long time away already and it yet it was only yesterday. How nice was Sunday especially? Winter loosened its tight grip and made me ditch the ugg boots in favour of thongs…It did feel like a summer’s day. Not only temperature-wise but also wave-wise. Small, clean waves called for the longboard. Bruce (my mal) was very happy to get an outing – the first one after a while. It always takes me a while to get used to the massive board after riding my short board most of the time. I had a few almost embarrassing stacks but once I got the hang of it again, I had a ball in front of the skate park on a fun right. The water temperature was not quite that summery mind you. It was a bit on the cooler side but still very nice. The rest of Sunday, I spent with other summery activities such as Bondi markets and yay… the first BBQ of the season (which gave me the first BBQ hangover of the season…not so yay).
I only wish I would have known in advance that this weekend is going to be the first taste of summer. The weekend was meant to be a Venus Goes Gidget surf-away weekend. Unfortunately, I did not get enough aspiring gidgets together to make it worthwhile so I had to cancel. It seems like everyone got scared away by the really bad weather of the preceding weeks. If we would have only known, it would have been a perfect Venus Goes Gidget surf-weekend weather and surf-wise. Perfect beginner conditions. Oh well next time. It’s not in my nature to give up so I’ll try one more in winter. I still have three spots for the one on the 22nd August if anyone’s keen email me at email@example.com
Because the surf away fell through and I had a free weekend, I thought I’ll get the old girl’s crew (not as in old but as in the usual suspects) together and go for a roadie at least. Since everyone had been fairly busy lately and caught up in their own stuff, a roadie with my girlfriends was long overdue anyway. I was quite surprised (positively surprised) that all three gidgets made time for the Saturday road trip at short notice. We met up for a 7.30 am start. I think at first, everyone was secretly hoping that the others would be bailing so they could stay in bed too but no one did. Everyone made it more or less bright-eyed. And the result: very happy and a little big smug gidgets because we did not bail. We headed down South to the National Park to Garie. The conditions did not look amazing. It was only small and again, we almost bailed, but we thought we may as well go now that we were there….and then…what happened? We had so much fun we stayed in the water for about two and a half hours. Even though the surf was not amaaaazing, it was not too much hard work either. I was very happy to see my friend Jules back to old strengths after she had to stay out of the water for a while due to a mean ankle injury. And it was great to see Amy and Anna get their surf mojo back after more or less prolonged water absence due to work and other commitments. Happily out-surfed, we then stuffed our pretty faces with lots of tasty food at a little eatery in Bundeena. Ahhhh there’s nothing better than surf munchies.
All in all a super fun weekend after all. I was not even too disappointed anymore about the cancelled Venus Goes Gidget surf away….Everything always happens for a reason and maybe the reason was to spend some quality time with my good old gidget friends.
Have a great week gidgets and friends of gidgets. Hope you get a surf in even though the week ahead does not look too exciting…quite small. There’s meant to be a spike on Friday but that’s about it…just like in summer. Let’s just hope the temperature stays summery too.
