Have you watched Surfer Dude with Matthew McConaughey by any chance? It’s a about a pro surfer who is sitting through a flat spell. Like a starved puppy he gets up every morning to check the surf and desperately looks for any swell lines on the horizon. He drives up and down the coast in CA to find that tiny bit of swell. But nothing, nada. Desperation grows by the day. That’s what I feel like at the moment. (On a side-note, admittedly, quite a bad movie, but Matthew McConaughey in boardshorts for 90 minutes helps).
And ok, I’m exaggerating a little bit, it’s not flat flat (well, it is today) there was a little tiny wave on the weekend. Good for a relaxing surf on your mal or maybe you found a little shorey somewhere that was surfable. We went to the National Park on Saturday and took the mals for a ride and had a fun session. Some guys also seemed to have a ball in the shorey on short boards.
Or you could always use the time of mini waves and glorious winter weather to improve your swimming skills which could come in handy in big swells if you find yourself without board at any point and need to do the swim of shame.
Where to swim? There are quite a few options for the peeps in the Eastern suburbs. Flat days like these are perfect for a swim across the bay in Bondi. I usually try to find a buddy to do the ‘crossing’ with me. I don’t know for some reason I feel a bit vulnerable out there all by myself without a board.
If you are not a big fan of ocean swimming try the Icebergs pool, which got the added benefit of a sauna. A good place to warm up your feet and toes after a prolonged stay in 16 degree water without a wettie.
If the hustle of bustle of Icebergs is too much for you – especially on a Sunday, they’ve got their swimming race stuff on, you can also try Bronte pool. It’s the mini version of Icebergs. No sauna though. And it’s only a 30 metre pool. Which is kind of good. Keeps your lap count up ;-)
The other thing you could do to get your water/wave fix in, is watching the Tahiti Pro in Teahupoo. For a while it seemed like they were facing the same fate as we do here with a flatspell. But there are waves and barrels now. Having said that, it’s not the usual big wave madness. Mind you it’s still 6ft which would be still massively scary. Watch it here >>
The surf forecast looks pretty dire for here. Maybe we get a bit of South swell on Wednesday. Fingers crossed.
In other news, check out Ali’s profile on Venus Goes Gidget. She’s Venus Goes Gidget’s new nutritionist and is going to spoil the gidgets with delicious, healthy, fresh food on the Venus Goes Gidget Surf aways. Have a look >>
