The good news of the day, I’ve got my stitches out yesterday, so it can only be a matter of time to get back into the water. In the meantime, I have to rely on social media and email newsletters to get my daily wave fix. And lucky there are plenty of them. In fact, they are popping up left, right and center.
Instagram, in particular, is the favourite medium of every wannabe wave/ surf photographer. With their fancy filters, they make it really hard to make a photo look bad. Having said that, even professionals who don’t need the filters have resorted to Instagram due to it’s popularity. Just sending out a newsletter is not doing the job anymore….So who is the who of Instagram surfing world?
Newsletters gone Instagram
@Aquabumps
If you love the beach and live in the Eastern suburbs and you don’t know Aquabumps you must live under a rock and even then you would probably know Aquabumps as they’ve probably photographed every rock in Bondi and surrounds over the last 12 years or so. Uge can also be found on Instagram these days, just follow @Aquabumps
@Frothers
The lovely guys from Frothers started out with a photo newsletter but they’ve also got their surf pics of Eastern suburbs and surrounds up on Instagram @Frothers
@Saltmotion
Is the Frother/Aquabumps equivalent of the Northern Beaches. Other than a newsletter, they are now posting their wave/surf shots of Manly and surrounds on Instagram too @Saltmotion
Facebook gone Instagram
@Soboimage
I first came across Sobo when I almost surfed over him in the water with a big fat underwater camera. Instead of getting upset about the close call with the fin of my board, he kindly directed me to his facebook page. His Instagram account reads…’I take photos of the wet’ … First I thought …oh another dude who takes photos in the surf in Bondi. I do love his pics though as he takes them usually in the water and posts beautiful underwater shots.
@Morning Bondi
Amaury Treguer takes photos down in Bondi every morning and posts an album on his facebook page and some pics on Instagram. He’s got quite a following these days. He’s got a good mix of photos as he’s not just taking photos of the surf but in and around the water.
For Surfpics beyond Sydney
@Jessicasmartphotos – follow her for lots and lots of beautiful and inspiring photos from Eastern suburbs and Indo predominantly. Inspiring and beautiful photos.
@Surf Photography – shares amazing surf pictures from amazing photographers from all over the world
@Surfing_Aus – follow them for lots of nice wave shots around Australia
@Surfspots – pictures of awesome surf spots around the globe
Stalking the pros
@KellySlater and @Sally_Fitz are constantly on Instagram or follow ASP World Tour for behind the scenes shots and official shots of the tour.
If you like looking at pretty boards too
Follow @Waxasurfboards – behind the scenes pics from shaper Scott ( also check out the background story ‘what happens in the shaping shed’)
Or @Theladyofmanycolours I’ve stumbled over her amazing surfboard designs in a shop in Manly and she’s got a whole lot of photos of her truly beautiful boards up on Instagram.
And of course don’t forget to follow @venusgoesgidget.
All these sites are great for Friday afternoon distractions…bringing a bit of beach into the office or the bus queue or in my case an admittedly rather poor substitute for surfing. I still prefer the real thing and can’t wait to get myself back into the water. Fingers crossed rather sooner than later.
Hope your Friday avo goes past quickly if you are at work and have a great weekend gidgets and friends of gidgets.
