About you in a few words and how you got to surfing: I come from a relatively nomadic family – born in Melbourne, then we lived in New York, before moving to Perth. I have always loved the ocean, and my fondest childhood memories are of Rottnest in WA and playing on Cottesloe Beach. I moved to Sydney when I was 21, but didn’t start surfing until I was about 23, after I’d moved from Bondi to Avalon on the Northern Beaches. I vividly remember watching my supercool surfergirl friend Carrie (she was an extra in Blue Crush, true story) surfing at North Av on a beautiful sunny Australia Day and thought I should give this a go…and there was no turning back. Pretty soon surfing was under my skin and I’ve been obsessed ever since. I’ve been back in Bondi for seven years now – it’s definitely my home in Australia – but enjoy chasing waves all over the world. I only wish I’d started surfing younger as I don’t think I’m getting any better!
Local break: Bondi
What I love about surfing: Gosh, so much to love. I love that surfing makes you totally present – whether it’s one foot ripple rides or something a bit scarier your focus is on the waves and you’re totally in the moment. I love that surfing is the best way to commune with nature, there’s something deeply peaceful about it. Hot pink sunrises. Golden dusks. Dolphins. I love that the same sorts of characters pop up in the surf wherever you are in the world, it’s a universal language which is kind of cool. I love that it keeps me fit, there is nothing as good as that total body tired feeling you get after surfing all day.
What I hate about surfing: Getting into wet wetsuits, first surf of the season in a steamer, bruises on my hipbones, seawater coming out of my nose in a meeting – all pretty minor complaints. What my friends hate about surfing is that I can never make a firm plan in the mornings on the weekends, in case the waves are on!
Favourite surfspot in Oz: First Point at Noosa in golden dusk tones, The Pass at Byron in autumn and winter, Point Plomer with no one else around, day trips to Garie / North Av / Palmy
Favourite surfspot overseas: Shipwrecks at Nusa Lembongan in Bali, Malibu, Wilks at Namotu, Betty’s in the Maldives
Favourite surfboard: All my boards are Takayama, love the ride and the colour palette (very important!). But my favourite is my 9’1 ‘In the Pink’, affectionately known as ‘the aircraft carrier’.
Favourite surfer: Kassia Meador or Belinda Baggs, too hard to choose.
Favourite surf movie: Sprout, with the ladies chapter on repeat, and that killer soundtrack.
What you do when you are not surfing: I’m a public policy consultant by day – I am passionate about evidence based policy that drives positive social impact. When not at work or in the surf you can usually find me either doing yoga, with my nose in a book or enjoying yummy food with friends.
