Winter Warmers

By Venus Goes Gidget · On July 20, 2014

Winter-warmer-page-headerYour first priority after a “refreshing” winter surf? A hot shower to defrost your toes and your fingers…Next? Snuggle up in front of the heater and fill up your empty surf bellies with something warm.

Here are my two absolute favorite, super simple but delicious winter warmers

After your morning surf: Tin Tin’s Porridge
Ingredients
  • Porridge (I use Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain porridge because I love it but even your stock standard porridge it will be super tasty)
  • LSA – Linseed Soy Almond
  • Maple Syrup
  • Milk of your choice (I use full fat milk but yummy with any other type of milk too)
  • Banana (optional)
Method

Cook the porridge according to the instructions on your porridge, sprinkle it with LSA – lots of LSA  – and maple syrup on top. Add banana for extra refuel. So tasty. I swear you’ll never look at your porridge the same way. And your surf belly will be veeeery happy.

Anytime after a cold surf: Surf Dandy Tea
Ingredients for you and your surf buddy (i.e. makes two delicious Dandies)
  • 4 tsp roasted dandelion root (you can buy it at most health food stores in bulk)
  • 1 cup Soy Milk
  • 2 tsp Honey (optional)
  • Cinnamon (optional)
Equipment to work your magic
  • Plunger
  • Milk frother (10 bucks so worth it)
  • 2 big Mugs
Method

Put four teaspoons of dandelion into the plunger. Add boiling water and leave for one minute and one minute only. Less than one minute and it will be too watery. More than one and chances are that it’s too bitter. Even once you’ve pushed the plunger down, don’t let it sit in the plunger. Pour it into the mugs right after the minute’s over.

During that precious minute pop the milk into the microwave for one minute (serves as a timer for the dandelion too – see what I did there). Use your magic wand aka milk frother and turn the milk into a frothy foam, pour into mugs and voila…your Dandy is ready to warm you up from inside out. Sweeten with honey and some cinnamon on top. It’s also the perfect coffee alternative and really quite healthy….the hippies say it’s a great liver cleanser.

Enjoy Gidgets and stay warm
