This time we’ve got a gidget from Byron Bay. I stumbled over Jules’ website a while ago and absolutely loved it. As it turns out Jules is not only inspiring people through her passion of healthy food and nutrition but she also loves to hit the waves. So we asked her to be part of our Great Gidget series and find out more about Jules and her love of surfing.
Your name: Jules Galloway
About you in a few words and how you got to surfing:
I’m a passionate naturopath, health and wellness blogger, and raw food expert. When we moved from Melbourne to a town near Byron Bay, my husband taught me to surf. I loved it so much that the rest is history!
Local break:
Wategos and The Pass, plus it’s a short drive to Lennox Head
What I love about surfing:
The joy and freedom of being out in the water. The fact that it clears my mind and washes away my worries. The connection I experience with the ocean and nature. The feeling of catching a long wave all the way in. And the awesome friends I’ve made!
What I hate about surfing:
What’s to hate? Ok, if I had to pick something, it would be the crowds, and people dropping in.
Favourite surfspot in Oz:
Wategos, or the Lennox Pub break
Favourite surfspot overseas:
Yet to experience any overseas breaks! But I’m very keen to go to Hawaii.
Favourite surfboard:
My 8’6” Neilsen Brothers minimal has served me well as a beginner. But I’ve just moved up to a 9’1” McTavish Fireball Evo II and I can’t wait till I’ve got it dialled in.
Favourite surfer:
I’m inspired by Bethany Hamilton. And I have a total lady crush on Alana Blanchard.
Favourite surf movie:
Two short movies come to mind. The clip that really got me into surfing is by Rest Your Eyes Productions and is called “Beautiful Surfing at Byron Bay.” I saw it online and decided to take up surfing, it just looked so beautiful. Check it out on You Tube and you’ll see why. The other movie that has really touched me is one about older women surfing, called Women Who Run With The Tides. I want to be like them when I grow up!
What you do when you are not surfing:
Walking the lighthouse track and doing yoga. Blogging, cooking, creating raw desserts, drinking good coffee, and hanging out with my husband and dogs.
