Which sunscreen are you?

By Venus Goes Gidget · On January 22, 2015

Sunscreen-600-x350Summer is well and truly here. And it’s awesome. What’s not to love about summer? It’s hot, we’ve got some fun little waves, no need for pesky steamers but oh hang on there was one thing I didn’t like so much…summer time is also sunburn time so we’ve asked five gidgets to tell us which sunscreen they are using to protect their precious gidget skin from the sun.

I have a new, natural, organic fav – Surfyogis. Found it in Bali on the last trip. It’s natural, thick and doesn’t come off in the surf. It’s purplish white, which is an interesting look, but quite like it. You can paint little pics on your cheeks even ;) Oh and it smells a little like coffee, which makes me really happy :) Only thing is its a tad hard to get off, and you can’t smear it all over your body. But fab for the face!

For my face I use Swox Surf Sunscreen, which is a sunscreen specifically developed for surfers (by surfers). It offers maximum protection, is super water resistant and doesn’t sting in your eyes.

For the rest of my body I also like the Banana Boat 50+ sport, although it can make the board a little bit slippery if you put it on directly before you head into the water.

I use cancer council face day wear sunscreen with a tint, every single day.  For surfing, I’ll add some extra tan sins on top. But this stuff is fantastic, it doesn’t clog your pores and is easy to reapply.

I’ve been trying out a new natural sunscreen called Greenfoot Mama. It’s made by a local lady in Lennox Head. I like it because it’s natural and smells lovely, like chocolate. You do have to re-apply it more often than chemical sunscreens but I’d much rather have this on my skin than nasty ingredients that I can’t pronounce. She also makes a healing balm that’s amazing for any cuts and scrapes you might get on the rocks. I used it on a graze on my knee and it was the best!

On my face I use:

SPF30+ as a base layer for all my daytime surfs, then a full face of bronze zinc; SPF 30+ for my morning surfs in summer; Moisturiser with SPF 15 for my general day wear.

I get a bit lazy with sunscreen for the dawn & dusk surfs…which I actually think helps my skin gradually build up its own sun protection defences without blasting it with full sun. On my legs / ass…I don’t really use any!!! And this is because its too slippery with the wax on the board! This is a bit of a dilemma, and one that I would actually prefer to resolve in a better way!

I’m not too brand specific, but prefer a thinner one if im using it under zin and use a thicker one if I’m only using sunscreen.

Note: cloudy days still call for zinc in my world! They are using high on the UV index :-)

Oh and don’t forget gidgets…slip slap slop…to answer Bella’s question, you can always get yourself a pair of surf leggings or if you would like to protect your shoulders and arms, check out our gorgeous gidget suits.

Thanks to all the gorgeous gidgets who contributed to this article…I’m sure many gidgets out there will be very grateful for your tips.

Enjoy summer

Thanks so much for featuring me! Given that my husband had a melanoma in his 30’s, natural sunscreen is something I’m very passionate about :)
