This time we have a Great Gidget from the other side of the world. Meet this gorgeous young lady – Nena. Nena calls Costa Rica and Mexico her surfing home. And she doesn’t keep it all to herself. She’s just started TuCamino travel to get you to her favourite surf places. We had the pleasure to meet with her the other day. Here’s the interview with Nena.
Your name:
Nena Belen Ocampo
About you in a few words and how you got to surfing:
I am originally from Texas but have lived off and on in Costa Rica for years now. Surfing was not something I even thought about being from the Dallas area and being about 10 hours from the beach. On one of my first trips to Costa Rica, I would watch the surfers from the beach. There are a lot of male surfers and not many women. I remember thinking, “If they can do that, so can I.” After a few lessons, I was hooked!
Local break:
Playa Cocles, Costa Rica
What I love about surfing:
The feeling. It is the best high in the world when you are on a wave. It is pure bliss just being in the ocean and riding a wave is even better. You truly focus on your surroundings and that moment is the only thing that matters. I love the lifestyle and the community. I have met some of the most amazing people.
What I hate about surfing:
is that it is a constant practice. There are days when I feel like I did not improve. There are times when I feel that all I do is wipeout. It is something that requires your attention and focus but it is worth it.
What advice would you give to ladies starting out on their surf journey:
Keep going. Don’t give up. Like everything in life, it is something you have to work at to get “good” at. Keep surfing and when you feel like you cannot surf any more, keep going.
Favourite surfspot in Oz:
Have not been here yet. It is on the list!!
Favourite surfspot overseas:
Sayulita, Mexico. The waves are so much fun and here I really get to practice grace and balance on a long board and have to work my arms on a short board.
Favourite surfboard:
My current board is amazing! 6’0 Carton of Costa Rica and I also love 9’0 Walden boards.
Favourite surfer:
This is tough. I have so many! Lakey Peterson is amazing and Coco Ho. I also really love watching Carlos Munoz.
Favourite surf movie:
Zero to 100: Lakey Peterson or Leave a Message. Both feature female surfers!
What you do when you are not surfing:
When I am not surfing, I am on the beach, riding my bike, reading, working on TuCamino Travel, making jewelry, traveling to other surf destinations!
