Finally, after weeks of flatness and then yucky onshore conditions we were blessed with some nice surf again.
Saturday morning I woke up at 5.30 keen as mustard for some surf but did not manage to roll myself out of bed until a couple of hours later as it was pissing down rain and howling NE winds. I almost did not bother to check the surf but desperation goes a long way. And I was rewarded with 2ft + blowing perfectly offshore, great banks (really nice right in front of the lifeguardtower) and an (almost) empty line-up. It was brilliant. When else do you get good surf in Bondi on a Saturday morning at the start of summer all by yourself? Only when it’s pissing down rain… And I love surfing in the rain. You are really out there with the elements and don’t care about getting wet. Everyone else tends to hang inside being grumpy bums while I got to play in the water. Yay for me.
At around lunchtime the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful day. I think that’s when the hungry surf crowds took over Bondi and that’s when I indulged into my afternoon nap. I got woken up by the shark alarm I could hear all the way to my bedroom and could only imagine how quickly the line up was empty once more. There was still a small crowd at the left in the North Corner taking advantage of the North East swell but hardly anyone out on the bank in the middle (thanks shark). Wow, not 1 but 2 uncrowded surfs on a Saturday in Bondi. Not bad at all.
With the sun out this morning, small waves and light offshore winds, it was only a matter of time until the crowds would take over Bondi today though. That’s why I made my way to the Northern Beaches. We surfed a beautiful, beautiful break North of Narrabeen. Love it up there, there were a few people out but nothing to crazy. 2-3ft nicely shaped waves. The water was amazing. It was warm and soooo clear, I could see all the way to the bottom. Pretty. Shame it stopped breaking mid morning due to a super high tide.
I did not get to surf this avo surf but it looked pretty average anyway. So does the week ahead. I’m glad I got my surf fix this weekend.
