Everyone’s complaining about the shit weather we had lately. So do I – most of the time. But really I don’t mind so much as long as it’s not constantly pissing down and super windy. I can give you at least 3 reasons why shit weather in December is good:
1 You don’t have to worry about getting burnt
2 You don’t have to feel bad if you sleep in after a hangover
3 You don’t have to worry about the usual summer flatspell
That’s right, we actually have waves and not the usual summer flatness that descends upon us with a continuous high. Bring on these lows I say that send us consistent 3-4 foot swell. Yay.
We had waves all weekend. Bondi on Sat was a solid 3-4 foot. The low tide in the morning made Bondi unsurfable though. I’ve checked early and it was pretty bad – just close-outs. Patiently, I was waiting for the tide to come in and headed out around lunchtime. It did not look too big but I managed to paddle out right when the set of the day was coming in and got smashed to start with. Yay for me. Great start to the session. I ended up having fun nevertheless. There was a nice left opposite the skate park and only a few other guys out, which is rare on a Saturday. I guess it still looked a bit rough which kept the backpackers away. It got a bit more crowded after a while but then the tide was turning which formed a killer rip that dispersed the crowd again. Hard work on the paddling front though.
Sunday would have been probably good super early like 5ish but I missed that session due to Christmas party related recovery sleep ins (well if you can call 7.30 a sleep in) and then the tide got too low. Again, I had to hold out until lunchtime if I wanted to surf anything other than close-outs. It has dropped to 2-3 foot and it was super clean. The right in the South was fairly busy but pretty good. I had a ball. The surf looked good all day and I’m hoping for another good session tomorrow morning again.
Next week is looking not bad either. Looks like Monday, Tuesday, we’ll have to play in the remainder of the current swell and another South swell is on the way for Wednesday. Maybe focus on the swell forecast not the actual weather forecast. That one is pretty dire again.
