Mmh, can’t really decide if it was a good or bad surf weekend. I guess that makes it an average surf weekend. We had a decent amount of swell, the wind was not as strong as it was forecast but something was not quite right.
Saturday, I’ve checked Bondi early it was around 3 foot fairly clean but closing out. I had my hopes up that the wind would not come up too much and it would get better once high tide comes around in the avo. I was right with the wind part but not with the high tide part. Usually high tide is working better for Bondi but not yesterday, quite the opposite. It was closing out even more than in the morning. Oh well, by then I was itching for a surf and tried to talk myself into the close-outs actually being barrels. Well, that only worked until I got absolutely violated in the surf. Seriously, I forgot how bad Bondi gets on close-out sets. I thought that wave would hold up for sure but it did and I tried to pull out at the last second. I should have just gone for it. Instead I followed my board into freefall. I curled up into a ball hoping to not land on my board which I did not. I did a few elegant washing machine style turn arounds and only knew where upside down was again when I hit the sand. Oh and not only did I stack it massively but I also got caught inside by a set. 3 close-outs on my head. The joy of surfing….It was still nice to be in the water but needless to say it was not the best surf.
Sunday forecast was North Swell and South winds (before they changed it again to North) so I’ve planned a trip up North. My wavefinder turned out to be a reliable source of information and we found the best break straight away. Bungan had a decent wave with 3ft + and some fun banks (a few close-outs too). We had a ball up there and surfed for ages. Great surf. Great fun.
In the afternoon, I’ve checked the home turf again and yes, again there was still swell hanging around. If only the banks were not so bad. I’ve watched for quite a while but could not get motivated to get into the water again.
Next week it seems like a bit of a mixed bag again. North East swell at the start of the week changing to South by midweek but also quite some wind from the South. Not quite sure what to recommend. Probably Bra or Tama to start with and Bondi maybe towards the end of the week.
By the way, congrats to Taj Burrow and Steph Gilmore who won the Gold Coast Pro. Go Aussies.
