I’ve been in Indo for a week now and in absolute bliss. Like every time once you get out of hectic Kuta, Bali, it feels like the world is slowing down. Forgotten are the busy days before holidays. I’m somewhere in Sumbawa, having quickly adapted to the rhythm of surfing, eating, sleeping. We are spending time between surfs watching the tide, listening to music or reading in shade. It’s super relaxed here.
Before we got to Sumbawa, we stayed 1 day in Kuta to sort out things like motorbikes. We’ve surfed Ulus which was fun too despite wet season. It was not the usual Ulus perfection but still great especially when you just arrive from 1ft Bondi dribbles. On the way to Ulus we got ‘robbed’ by the Bali police. Well not really but kind of. I thought we’ve got it all covered as we were smart enough to get an international driver’s licence but surely they still found an excuse to squeeze out some money out of us. Oh well…only in Bali. We then made our way through Bali on the motorbikes, then ferry to Lombok, crossed Lombok on the bikes and then another ferry before we arrived in Sumbawa. The trip was fairly smooth apart from a flat tire in my scooter but it was no big deal and got easily fixed on the way. Just wonder how that cut got into the inside of my tire…
Oh well, in Sumbawa now, that’s what counts…Waves have been great. 3-4ft glass every day and fairly empty line ups. It’s been a bit small yesterday but I needed a rest anyway. This morning, there were some crackers coming through again. Similar to Java, Sumbawa’s landscapes are stunning and are not yet tainted too much by tourists. Absolute paradise. Well before you get jealous, let me tell you paradise comes at a price. The currency is insect bites. Not only mozzies, but bed bugs, sea lice and all kind of flies and flees …oh did I mention spiders…there are spiders too.. so lots of spiders which bite too I figured…they can make paradise hell. I think I’ve got about 50 bites on my back which does not make for a great sleep at the best of times. I’ve never been so itchy in my life. But you live and learn, got my strategies now to deal with the nasty buggers but ye takes a bit getting used to. It’s boiling hot too. I’ve already had my fair share of sunburn and I’m staying out of the surf during lunchtime no matter how perfect the tides are. Almost got a sun stroke the other day. It would have been about 40 degrees and the water around 28…not much cooling down there.
Anyway, peeps gotta go…it’s also boiling hot in the internet café…and surf’s calling.
Have a great Chrissy everyone and hope you get some surf in good old Bondi too even if it’s just anklebiters…little wave better than no wave….
