Weekend Wave Wraps 0

Testosterone Overload

By Venus Goes Gidget · On April 8, 2013

IMG_3250When I was checking the forecast for the weekend on Thursday, it looked pretty sad. Rain all weekend. Luckily, sometimes the forecast is wrong. It actually turned out to be a decent weekend.

Friday morning still looked a bit gloomy, which kept the early morning crowds away despite glassy 2-3ft waves. Ranga (my new super fast surfboard) and I had a field day. So much fun. In fact so much fun, that I decided to go for round 2 around lunch time. Heaps of fun again. Having said that, it was a bit of a hassle compared to the morning. One would expect an empty line up in the middle of the day. What I did not consider were all the tradies who were fast to finish the work of the day to hit the surf just after lunch time to enjoy the fun 2 footers and the sun that’s come out after days of rain. Other well known rippers like Pama Davies, Eugene from Aquabumps, some Bra Boys (you can’t miss them with the trademark brotherhood tattoo) and the tradies made for a testosterone laden surf. You could feel the tension in the surf. The guys were like tigers pacing in a cage waiting for the odd bigger set coming through. At one point I thought I have to grow balls to catch a wave. Instead I started dropping in. Well, let me qualify that…I only dropped in when the cheeky boys thought they could snake me…not with ranga and me…I have to say I prefered the more peaceful morning crowd though…

Saturday morning looked like the smaller version of Friday. I ended up going to Garie which still had some decent size waves with fun walls. You would think the National Park is empty. I could not believe it when the car park was packed as. And we thought we were early. There were quite a few peaks which dispersed the crowd in the line-up a bit. Having said that, it was a sausage fest out there again and you really had to fight to get some waves. Well, not really fight, but it was snaking galore out there as well, so you constantly need to paddle to not lose your position in the line up…a rather stupid game of overtaking each other on the inside. Anyway, I caught some fun waves in the end. That’s what counts.

Sunday, was tiny. Only 1ft. I thought about taking Bruce down but decided to give it a miss after all. I could not be bothered fighting 20 other people on longboards for micro waves. So I went for a swim instead at the Rockpools in Tama which was really nice and hassle free.

There won’t be many waves worth fighting for in the week to come. The forecast looks rather dire with 1ft waves all week…oh well at least it’s meant to be sunny…

Have a great week everyone my lovely gidgets and friends of gidgets.
