Last weekend I’ve expected a massive storm because the forecast called for massive waves. Usually, massive waves come with a Southerly change as in a lot of rain and even more wind. The swell did arrive Saturday morning as well as some clouds but the big storm stayed away. So we actually had good swell with sunshine and not too much wind. A pretty good combo in my books.
Usually I would also try to find a protected corner or place other than Bondi which is not maxing out but I’ve been a bit crook so I figured it’s not very wise to go for a surf in rather challenging conditions. It’s hard enough if you are fit as. So I made the call to sit this weekend out.
Instead we watched the waves from the grassy knoll instead which turned out to be quite interesting. You could actually see the swell arriving. It got bigger by the minute and within half an hour it doubled in size.
We actually saw one dude walking down in wetsuit and with a mal. He looked at the surf. Sat down. Watched for a bit. Turned around and walked home. It really sucks if you have to walk home dry but I think he made a good call too. Unlike another guy who had to be rescued out of the building swell by one of the lifeguards.
One guy was particularly brave, he caught a wave in and you could tell that this was meant to be his last wave judging by the fact that he was halfway up the beach after his wave. After a short hesitation paddled back out again after all. Not sure if that was the best call either as the paddle back seemed like fairly hard work. Oh well we’ve all been there….”just one more” turning into a mission.
Good news there won’t be a lack of swell this week. Bad news Bondi is not holding up and won’t be surfable until it drops a bit further, so you need a) the time and b) a car to get to Maroubra or some other beach that can handle the size or is a bit more protected.
And don’t forget your wettie if you don’t want to turn into an icy pole…seems like winter is really here now with freezing cold wind. Hope you get a few good waves in and have a great week gidgets and friends of gidgets.
