Last weekend was pretty lame in terms of waves. 1-2ft ankle biters. Having said that, I don’t mind small waves. I actually like them. It’s heaps of fun if you have a longboard. What I don’t like is small waves AND onshore winds. So not only was it small but also onshore. Quite the opposite of the North Shore in Hawaii… Lucky buggers had 10ft waves and offshore winds…perfect conditions for the ASP world tour showdown.
I’m usually not following competitive surfing that much but the combination of non-existing waves, average weather and the convenience of digital streaming made me stay in bed Sunday morning and watch the final day of the Pipemasters. And I have to say I got completely sucked in and mesmerised. For once I got drawn in because of the magical wave that is pipeline. I was also fascinated by the display of surfing. It’s insane how the guys throw themselves into that barrel. I was surprised how many did not actually come out though. When you read surf magazines or you see the recaps of the comps you usually only see the great rides and not the ones where they stacked it. Even pros are not perfect. Although some of them are close. Kelly Slater was amazing to watch again. He looks more casual surfing 10ft pipe than the average punter does catching 2ft waves in Bondi (Kelly won by the way).
The other highlight was Mick Fanning’s world title win. He needed to make it to the semis in order to secure the world title otherwise he would have lost it to Kelly Slater. And far out it was close. Mick Fanning only pulled out the ride he needed in the last few minutes of his heat. The judges – aware of the impact of the score – took ages to come up with it. And when they did, hell broke lose. Mick Fanning has won the third world title. I also loved his first interview after he won the world title. He was overwhelmed with emotion and not afraid to show it. Good on you. Congratulations Mick.
That was really as far as my surfing experience went last weekend….watching surfing on my iphone…
